Ashley | The Black Box Sessions 7
| Fashion Fetish Nude | August 2008 The Black Box Sessions was my first nude project. I knew that eventually the influence of Helmut Newton, Nobuyoshi Araki, Alfred Stieglitz (with Georgia O’Keeffe), Edward Weston, and even Robert Mapplethorpe would prove to be too difficult to quell. I’d shot a few nudes before this project, but I knew I would have to really devote myself to a few sessions to see if this is the direction I wanted to go in my art. The other element of this project was film. I started photographing using film a few years before and by 2008 I knew digital would be here to stay and film would be harder and harder to use commercially and cost effectively. However, I knew this project and most of my future projects would need to be shot on film using bigger format cameras not just 35mm. And so this project renewed my love affair with film and I haven’t looked back since. I contacted many models on that old MM site and even CL was useful. Much to my surprise I had a few answers my request and off I went into the art nude world. Thinking about it now some 13 years later it would prove to be one of the greatest decisions of my artistic career. While my skills were still developing as an artist working with nude models, I think I got off to a great start and the models that stepped up really made it easy for me as well. They were all so accommodating and patient as I fumbled about during some of the sessions as I decided to work solo without an assistant for all of these. I was under the impression (and rightfully so) that these sessions should be just between the model and me. I wasn’t nervous because of working with nude models. For some reason I’ve always felt completely at ease working with nude models even from the beginning. I was most nervous about making something with real artistic value. I certainly did not want to make something that everyone would look back on with embarrassment. Ashley was such a great session. She seemed to be such a happy and easy going person which made for a really great day of making photographs.
